Oil Pie

The one they just can’t keep their fingers out of.

In 1995 the world staged its first ever COP summit. It was the start of what we were led to believe was a turning point in fossil fuel production. The beginning of a downward trend. At the time, particulate matter in the air from burning fossil fuel stood at 360.67 parts per million. Today they stand at 421.5 parts per million.

The big fossil fuels producers would have you believe that this is because it takes time to wind down an industry upon which we are all so dependent. What they are less keen to discuss is just what they are actually doing towards the wind-down. According to Oil Exchange International and Friends of the Earth, between 2020 and 2022, the G20 countries pumped 142 billion US dollars into fossil fuel development.

Enough with the numbers now. You’ve seen them all a thousand times before and, let’s face it, they’re just numbers.

You’ve become a little immune to being bombarded with facts that sometimes make watching paint dry seem like an extreme sport. So many of us have reached that point. We have become inured to alarming news because it feels like we can do nothing to change our trajectory and pull out of this nosedive we find ourselves in.

That’s where I take my hat off to groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop…
