The problem with the clap system is that it facilitated bunging out a few claps without reading the article. Writers write in order to be read. I hope that some system is in place to allow for the fact that some people read faster than others but clapping without reading was just too widespread. Ir was also wide open to abuse. You could get followers to throw out fifty claps and up your earnings but it was not an indicator that you were attracting readers.
