There is a huge and lucrative industry that profits from selling the conformist dream. I have broken away from it in the way you suggest here but I live in Europe. When I talk to my friends in the US, it is fear of loss of medical benefits that forces them to keep their noses to the grindstone. Here that is far less of an issue.
